The following popped up in my Facebook newsfeed and I found it quite powerful.
The morning after I killed myself, I woke up.
I made myself breakfast in bed. I added salt and pepper to my eggs and
used my toast for a cheese and bacon sandwich. I squeezed a grapefruit
into a juice glass. I scraped the ashes from the frying pan and rinsed
the butter off the counter. I washed the dishes and folded the towels.
The morning after I killed myself, I fell in love. Not with the boy down
the street or the middle school principal. Not with the everyday jogger
or the grocer who always left the avocados out of the bag. I fell in
love with my mother and the way she sat on the floor of my room holding
each rock from my collection in her palms until they grew dark with
sweat. I fell in love with my father down at the river as he placed my
note into a bottle and sent it into the current. With my brother who
once believed in unicorns but who now sat in his desk at school trying
desperately to believe I still existed.
The morning after I killed myself, I walked the dog. I watched the way
her tail twitched when a bird flew by or how her pace quickened at the
sight of a cat. I saw the empty space in her eyes when she reached a
stick and turned around to greet me so we could play catch but saw
nothing but sky in my place. I stood by as strangers stroked her muzzle
and she wilted beneath their touch like she did once for mine.
The morning after I killed myself, I went back to the neighbors’ yard
where I left my footprints in concrete as a two year old and examined
how they were already fading. I picked a few daylilies and pulled a few
weeds and watched the elderly woman through her window as she read the
paper with the news of my death. I saw her husband spit tobacco into the
kitchen sink and bring her her daily medication.
The morning after I killed myself, I watched the sun come up. Each
orange tree opened like a hand and the kid down the street pointed out a
single red cloud to his mother.
The morning after I killed myself, I went back to that body in the
morgue and tried to talk some sense into her. I told her about the
avocados and the stepping stones, the river and her parents. I told her
about the sunsets and the dog and the beach.
The morning after I killed myself, I tried to unkill myself, but
couldn’t finish what I started.

Never, ever do anything so permanent because someone else is an asshole, because you don't have enough money, because you feel like you can never climb out of the hole that you're in, because someone said something, did something, started a rumor, touched you, hurt you, told you that you weren't worth the air you breathe - you are worth it. You can get out. You can overcome it. You can fix it. You can become stronger, you can "get over it", you can.
Please don't take your life - never give someone the satisfaction of "winning". Please call someone and talk about it. Call a suicide hotline - call your local law enforcement - it's easier to talk to a stranger over the phone than someone you know.

Day 7!! Woohoo! Week 1 complete!
We made it through week 1 and it's getting easier by the day. I don't know about Mr. P., but I'm not having any cravings. If I think about a specific food that I can't have, they yeah, I'm all "man I would really like a chocolate shake!" but that's not really an issue.
This morning I got up and fixed my breakfast and lunch to take to work and somehow managed to leave my salad on the kitchen counter. So I had my chicken salad for breakfast (today it was chicken, mayo, quartered green grapes, 1/2 a Fuji apple and a couple of broken up walnuts). I have to say, the walnuts were not the best addition - should have eaten those whole pieces separately. I ate a mixed fruit cup (in 100% juice) along with it.
Lunch time was when I realized my salad was MIA. I had a sweet potato, some baby carrots and salad dressing - with another fruit cup. That wasn't going to cut it. So I ordered Outback online and ran down to pick it up. Repeat of Day 6 lunch.
I snacked. You're not supposed to snack. I ate too many dates. They were delicious. I told myself they're off limits on Friday.
Dinner was compliments of Mr. P. He made some seared Mahi with the usual dinnertime veggie mix (frozen variety anyway). I'm really not a huge fan of fish. It was fine. I didn't dislike it, but it isn't something I will be craving. It's fish.
Here's the recipe. Seared Mahi Mahi with Zesty Basil Butter (sub clarified butter)
I also had a 24oz Tervis Tumbler filled with ice, then cranberry juice. I was watered out today.
Notes:
A week in and I think my body has adjusted to the ridiculous amount of water I have been consuming. I haven't had to get up the past two nights and I'm not running down the hall every 30 minutes at work! Progress I guess. I drank a lot of water before and wasn't in and out of the restroom all day. Maybe it was the sodium and chemicals in the Diet Coke and non Paleo foods holding on to water and now it's just flowing straight through.
Sunday I will be making up salads for the entire week (minus Monday because it's Outback day with the boss) and I will make a big batch of chicken salad vs. making it every morning. I haven't been on time to work since this started - I have a lot to do in the mornings as it is.

Day 6!! It's not that bad.
Actually it's not even remotely "bad" - it just takes a little work and planning.
Today was not a great planning day, but I did stay on track.
Whipped up some Whole30 ranch dressing this morning and another batch of mayo since I was using up what was left of the first batch. Then I forgot to grab a jar of salad. Which was ok, because I also stuck the dressing in the fridge to meld a bit while I got ready for work and well...that's where it stayed all day. At least it should be tasty for day 7!
I made more chicken salad for breakfast and I went out to lunch with my co-workers. They were kind and let me choose the place. We went to Outback Steakhouse and I ordered an unbuttered, unseasoned sirloin with unbuttered, unseasoned mixed vegetables, and a naked sweet potato (and water - for the record, I don't like their water). I did have my small bottle of ghee and a small shaker of cinnamon in my purse - so I drizzled a little 'butter' on my veggies and the potato got both. Everything was delicious. Seriously delicious.
I also had a handful of dates that I stuffed with raw cashews for 'dessert'.
Mr. P. made dinner again - he grilled a couple of grass-fed steaks and a mix of squash and zucchini and then roasted some green beans.
He also made clarified butter. Who is this man in my kitchen?
I almost forgot - I broke my water streak today. This morning I had some 100% cranberry juice. I love cranberry juice. I couldn't tell you the last time I had it - I swore off juice a long time ago because of it being high in sugar (natural or otherwise). It was a nice change. I may have a small glass each morning. Aside from that, I will just stick to water.
Woke up this morning and Mr. P. was gone. Still not sure if he has randomly decided to be quiet in the morning or if I am indeed sleeping better because of the Whole30 and the magic being worked on my insides.
Cheers!

Day 5 :-)
Hi. My name is Robin and I am addicted to Diet Coke.
I have loved Diet Coke since I was in high school. I'm 42. It's been a long time.
Prior to going Whole30 I was also enjoying Diet Dr. Pepper and Diet A&W Rootbeer. Oh and Diet Sunkist. I do love an orange soda...
All of the above are outlawed for Whole30. You know what? I quit cold turkey. I'm not a coffee drinker. Diet Coke was my morning caffeine. I haven't missed it. I haven't been craving it. Although sitting here thinking about it right now there's nothing I would love more than holding a big Polar Pop cup with crunch ice and a fountain Diet Coke - sipping those fizzy bubbles. Ahhhh...but yeah, nope. It hasn't been nagging at me like "go get one from the vending machine, it's just down the hall" or "there are still three 12 packs of rootbeer in the living room...you know you want one". Honestly, I'm fine without. On December 31st I walked into the office with my last extra large Diet Coke from the fountain at RaceTrac. When I got home from work, I was up until nearly 1:30am partly because it was New Year's Eve and partly because there were enough fireworks on my street to rival the evening show at Disney. I drank can after can of Diet A&W rootbeer. At midnight I dumped what little bit was left in my current cup (another of my beloved Tervis tumbler 24 ounce collection) in the sink and went back to my office to write thank you cards for Christmas gifts.
I have had nothing but water to drink since I got up and out of bed on January 1. Honestly I haven't had any real cravings for anything.
Today one of my co-workers asked me what I was doing. I looked at her like she was crazy. "Uhhh working?" she says "No...what are you doing? Your face looks different - less puffy?" Was my face puffy? I never thought it looked puffy...so of course when I got home I went right to a mirror and stared at myself. I think she's right. My face does look different. Just over 100 hours (HOURS!!!) in to the Whole30. Are you kidding me? Changes that fast?
So it's day 5. Getting close to a full week in! That's kind of exciting. After making dinner last night I told Mr. P. that I had no idea what I would make for dinner tomorrow. He said "I'll pick up some steaks or something" and this morning he hit the snooze button one less time and got up to make his fried eggs. Some things haven't changed yet...like the skillet tossed in the sink and the plate and fork with dried egg yolk sitting on the counter. Seriously...dried egg yolk is like a natural superglue once it's dried. Baby steps...
I will say I'm tired of the frozen veggie mix that I have. I guess I'll have Mr. P. stock up on green beans (seriously, my favorite frozen veggie is PictSweet whole green beans - they are so good - it's like buying fresh beans and not having to snap the ends off! I could eat a full family size bag of them and call it a meal.) Other than that. No complaints about the food outside of it being a lot more work.
Today I am had a repeat of day 4 for breakfast and lunch was leftover chicken from last night (seriously it was JUST as good reheated as it was for dinner) and a sweet potato.
I came home to find Mr. P. making dinner! Yesterday he said he was going to pick up steaks...but he didn't. Even though he went to Publix. So he made Garlic Lemon Shrimp (basically a scampi and it was DELISH) and Whole30 Balsamic Rosemary Roasted Potatoes...which were amazing. AMAZING. Oh and asparagus.
Recipes:
Garlic Lemon Shrimp - gluten free and Whole30 compliant!
Balsamic Potatoes - apparently these also call for sun dried tomatoes (which I just bought, but he probably didn't realize - SO adding them next week!)
If you're interested in doing the Whole30 yourself here are my initial suggestions.
- Read the book "It Starts With Food" cover to cover (really it's an easy read)
- Research recipes for each meal - pick 10 for a dinner rotation (it will be SO much easier to have those specific ingredients on hand because let me tell you trying to FIND any sort of canned/frozen/refrigerated ready to go items to make prep easy is a CHORE - you will read the labels, you will google "Whole30 yeast extract" or "Whole30 modified starch" - 99% of what you put your hands on at your regular local grocery store will be off limits. You would probably have better luck at Whole Foods - but I cannot stand going in that store - there is no "good" time - it's always a mad house and those damn sample things and people standing around eating OMG I just want to grocery shop can you get the hell out of my way?!) Pick 2 or 3 for breakfast and lunch - you will most likely go with what is easiest and eat it every day. It's only 30 days.
- Clean out your fridge and freezer. You will need extra room for pre-packing your lunch foods (I don't know about you, but I don't want to make a salad every night - I buy the stuff and divide it up into enough Mason jars for the week - grab and go).
- Shop. Buy everything you need to make enough of those meals for a full week. You may have to go to multiple stores (including a health food store) or order things from Amazon or whatever.
- Make anything you will need ahead of time - like mayo and salad dressing and clarified butter/ghee (if you don't want to pay extra for it already made - assuming you can find it).
- NOW start "tomorrow" (whatever that day is after you've done all of the above).

Day 4.
Well - I'm not sure if this is getting any easier. The dishes don't stop that's for sure. My grocery bill is thru the roof.
For breakfast I had...chicken salad. Chicken, mixed with a little homemade mayo, quartered green grapes and a dice golden delicious apple. It was good. I meant to toss in a handful of chopped walnuts, but I forgot.
Sadly, before lunch I was starving. So I ate my 2nd container of chicken salad and then I went to BJ's to pick up some groceries.
$149 (plus another $23 for gas)
- bag of frozen shrimp
- 6 pack of canned coconut milk
- 6 (or 8?) pack of canned black olives
- big bag of salad
- 6 pk of frozen veggies
- bananas (non-organic)
- a butternut squash
- tub of Kerrygold butter
- box of 16 mixed fruit cups (in 100% juice)
- case of canned pineapple chunks
- bag of pitted dates
- bag of almonds
- small container of raw cashews (all the roasted/salted ones were done with soybean oil)
- 2 packs of Applegate hotdogs
- big basket of sliced mushrooms
Back at work I refilled my favorite Tervis Tumbler with ice and water, nuked one of my pre-cooked sweet potatoes and drizzled it with ghee before sprinkling on some pumpkin pie spice! It was delicious. I also had 9 dates that I stuffed with raw cashews throughout the afternoon.
I needed chicken stock (although I'm not sure for what now) and what I had on hand was organic, but not compliant. Getting to be a theme...so before work I tossed a bag of chicken thighs, some baby carrots, onion, garlic, bay leaves, parsley, salt and pepper in the crock pot and covered with water, left it on low all day. The house smelled amazing when I got home.
I fished out the chicken and carrots and put them in a ceramic baking dish and covered them with a marinade made from EVOO, garlic, spicy brown mustard, salt, pepper, lemon juice, rosemary, and balsamic vinegar. Threw it in the over at 375 for 20 minutes and tossed a bag of mixed veggies in the microwave. The house smelled even MORE delicious - I do love balsamic...the chicken was great - fell apart, melt in your mouth, moist and flavorful.
Later this week I'll whip up another batch of the marinade and actually let some chickyboobs marinate in it all day and we'll toss those bad boys on the grill. I should have added mushrooms before tossing dinner in the oven tonight. Too bad I didn't think of it sooner.
I'm calling it a success. Twenty-six days to go. Better sleep is one of the "side effects" of Whole30. Either I am actually sleeping better, or my husband of 15 years has finally decided he can get up, dressed and out the door in the pre-dawn hours WITHOUT turning on all the lights, closing doors loudly (really? you can't turn the knob first?) and waking me up. I wonder if I can have both....

Day 3...
Well - this morning Mr. P. got up and made himself a couple of fried eggs before he left for work. He came in and said "since I can't have butter, what can I use to keep my eggs from sticking?" Better yet...why are the eggs sticking to the non-stick pan?
I told him coconut oil or olive oil. He chose grapeseed oil. It's not banned on for Whole30, but it's also not the best choice because it's high in Omega6 fatty acids. Apparently you have to keep your Omega3s and Omega6s balanced? Who knew eating was so much work?
Breakfast for me was a large sweet potato with cinnamon. I have really got to get on the ball here and whip up some mayo, ghee, and salad dressing. I thought about sauteing some fresh pear slices in a little coconut oil and sprinkling with more cinnamon, but frankly, I didn't want to wash the pan. Again.
Another point i've noticed - it sure seems like i'm doing the dishes non-stop. I really want to whip up some chicken and / or tuna salad with some approved mayo (homemade) and diced apples, pears, grapes and probably some nuts for the chicken salad.
Lunch for me was a couple of hamburger patties and a glass of water.
My grocery trip didn't produce what I had planned so I decided to wing it. I made a stir-fry with jumbo shrimp, fresh broccoli (trimmed to small florets), a handful of baby carrots (shredded), 1/3 bag of angel hair cole slaw mix (this bag happened to be nothing but cabbage), a spoonful of ghee, some garlic and olive oil. It was actually pretty good for not having anything much to it. We also split an avocado...and more water. Water water everywhere...
After doing the dinner dishes (seriously, i've never done so many dishes in my life) I whipped up some Failproof Paleo Whole30 Compliant Mayo thanks to Sonia over at The Healthy Foodie! So I will be making some chicken salad - woo hoo!
Mr. Paisley is sooo not enjoying this - has he read the book? No. He thinks he can have like 5 foods. Ever. For 30 days. I need to step it up a notch and get some cooking done so that he can stick with it for the 30 days. I think if I have it made up ahead of time he'll suck it up and see it to the end with me. I won't lie - it's not easy. It is so hard (and time consuming) to fine anything that doesn't come from the produce department that you can use. I don't have enough hours in my day to dice tomatoes to make a pasta sauce to go on spaghetti squash. Example - hit up Trader Joe's today. I left without chicken broth. Because every brand they had contained something on the "No" list. Seaweed extract, soy-whatever, sugar...the coconut water had sugar. I paid $8 for a small jar of almond butter because they had a house brand that was nothing but almonds. Applegate lunch meat - nope - cured with sugar, that seaweed junk....even the frozen vegetables were a no go! I left with the almond butter, a jar of ghee, a jar of unsweetened applesauce, a small jar of sun dried tomatoes, a small can of tomato paste, and a bag of jumbo shrimp for $34.
I have no idea what i'm going to have him make for dinner since i'm working late this week. It's only day 3.

Day 2!
Successful day 2 of Whole30. As far as I can tell, Mr. P. left with an apple (maybe 2) and some carrots.
I made it a point to make myself some breakfast - 5 scrambled eggs nearly beaten to death with the KitchenAid (how else do you get fluffy eggs when you can't add milk or cream?) and a can of crushed pineapple in juice.
Mental note - put the other can of pineapple in the fridge. It's so much yummier when it's cold!
And water. Good old water. I've been filling up the Brita tank religiously. I like my water COLD and frankly our tap water is gross so I don't want to ruin my cold water with nasty ice cubes. I'm a water snob. I admit it. I will drink tap water at my in-law's house in Georgia or at the cabin in Tennessee, but i'm not a fan of Florida tap water. It doesn't have to be bottled, but it does have to be filtered.
I don't think Mr. P. really cares for sweet potatoes. He only ate a couple of bites of the large one I made for him last night, so I nuked it and called it lunch. I didn't even add extra cinnamon.
He came home from work while I was out in the back yard and fried up a couple of eggs for himself and then headed next door to work on the roof. I've been gone awhile - almost a year ago we bought the house next door to us when it went up for auction. We'll get caught up on that later. Just know we completely gutted it and it's going to be fabulous.
I snacked on some baby carrots. They were kind of bitter. I've had enough water to float a barge thru the Panama Canal and i've realize that we were soooo NOT prepared to start this Whole30. Aside from the fresh fruits and vegetables and some frozen meat - everything here is off limits. Luckily - we have that house next door. We have the new fridge there already - even though it's still completely gutted inside. I'm emptying our fridge and taking all the stuff that is off limits over there for the duration of these 30 days. Things like butter...and sour cream...and cheese...and all those condiments. I don't want to have to dig thru the fridge to try to find the one thing I can have. Plus i'm going to need a lot of room for lunch containers.
Dinner was good - I can think of several ways to make it delicious, but they're not legit for now. Stuffed Acorn Squash - click the link to see the recipe over at Stupid Easy Paleo. I left out the bacon (because I don't have any that meets the requirements) and the fennel...because I don't like fennel.
Voila! The final product. I plated it up pretty and added some slivered almonds because my friend Angela is a chef and if I mention food on Facebook there HAS to be a photo.
I also tossed the rest of my sweet potatoes in the crock pot to cook overnight. Easy peasy prep and the house will smelled delicious! Similar to Day 1 - I scrub the potatoes, brush with coconut oil, sprinkle with cinnamon, poke some holes and wrap in foil individually. Stack 'em up in the crock pot and you can let them go on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours. I store them in a large, covered container in the fridge - still wrapped in the foil) and pull them out as needed, slice them open, sprinkle more cinnamon and reheat in the microwave (minus the foil).
